Arthritis Walk®

Thank you for participating in the 2012 Arthritis Walk®!
The Arthritis Walk® is the signature fundraising event for the Arthritis Foundation. But it's not just an event, it's a celebration of year-round movement to help prevent and treat arthritis.

Every year we get together to celebrate movement and make a positive impact on the lives of people living with arthritis by raising funds for arthritis research, education and life improvement programs in communities across the country.

Our rallying cry, Let's Move Together® encourages people to get up and get moving. When you join us at the Arthritis Walk®, you're not moving alone-you are becoming part of a community looking to achieve better health and change lives at the same time. We hope to see you there!

Are you involved with the Arthritis Walk because of a child with arthritis? Then read on, because this may apply to you! Arthritis Walk teams within the Heartland Region that fundraise $1200 or more will receive free JA Conference registration for one family of four. That's right, raise $1200 or more at the Arthritis Walk, and the Arthritis Foundation will cover the registration fees of one family of four. If you have questions about this fundraising incentive, please contact your local AF staff Walk Manager or Chris Crowley at ccrowley@arthritis.org. Learn more about the JA Conference.

Youth Honoree - Delaney
Delaney was just 6 years old when she woke up one morning and tried to get out of bed and couldn’t walk. She was diagnosed with Pauciarticular Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) in her left foot and right hip joints in December, 2009. By the following summer her JIA had spread throughout her body to both hips, both feet, her shoulders, neck and right hand.

Delaney’s JIA treatment plan is being led by Pediatric Rheumatologist, Dr. Polly Ferguson at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. Dr. Ferguson has been extremely accommodating in helping Delaney understand what is going on with her joints, and why she is experiencing so much pain and fatigue. Dr. Ferguson has helped Delaney understand the importance of her weekly shot, and why wearing the proper shoes are critical for her condition. Delaney’s medical regimen also includes a weekly oral chemotherapy medication.

Medical Honoree - Dr. Polly Ferguson
Iowa City, IA

Dr. Polly Ferguson received her Medical Degree from the University of Iowa. She trained as a resident in Pediatrics and as a fellow in Pediatric Rheumatology at the University of Virginia, where she remained to complete a post-doctoral research fellowship. Her first faculty position was at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dog Honoree - Sadie
Sadie is a nine year old, mixed breed female adopted from the Animal Rescue League in November, 2003. She was only 10 months old when she was adopted, but had lived in many different homes. Sadie and her siblings were abandoned in a box, and left at the door of the Rescue League. Although adopted quickly, Sadie went to an owner that spent little time with her, and she was kept in an outdoor pen with little attention, no socialization, or training. She was returned to the League nine months later due to her incessant barking.
